I'm going to have to admit right off that I really didn't have fun with this one. There's no technical flaws, but elements of the gameplay just didn't strike me as entertaining.
Overall the game has gotten good aggregate reviews but a few choices in it just left me waiting to see if the 86 minutes was up, rather than getting into it.
Crimson land is another top down twin-stick shooter genre game. As usual, I played it in solo mode with the KB+M.
There was little in the way of options to tweak, and it didn't have any issue starting. Though the Steam copy I had did spend a good portion of time checking for redistributables I already had installed. Not so much a flaw with the game, but this process does need to be made to run faster.
While the splash screen is nice and and UI is fairly slick and easy to navigate, I found the rest of the game to be rather bland. I'm fine with a muted colour pallet, but this one was just overly dull. Even with the inevitable blood splatter and weapon effects the game just looks uninteresting.
Enemy designs also feel uninspired. There's several types of zombie/mutant and spiders that I came across, but no actual variety. This does mean that it is really easy to tell the various enemies apart.
Except for those 90% transparent bastards. It's a very subtle effect and I eventually I just decided to say "screw my accuracy score" and fired in a wave until a bullet found a target to focus on. This is not fun. I've got 6on6 vision and no difficulty differentiating colour (have to have tests every 2 years), and I really really struggled to see these things.
Thankfully there are guns.
Lots and lots of guns.
But... This also presents a problem. Depending on the level, the RNG may just decide to give you a shitty weapon for that round. While it is possible to win, I found I was far better off restarting the round. Especially when going for a perfect clear.
In the campaign rounds; there are 6 zones, with 10 levels each. In my playtime I made it to round 8 of zone 3. Unlocked about half the weapons and 2/3 the amount of perks. It does make the unlock rate fairly good. If you can progress through the game you can steadily unlock new stuff to play with.
It is just a pity there's not a lot of fun things to unleash it onto. I really liked the early unlock Shotgun, and mid unlock Seeker Rocket weapons. With how the enemies swarm or clump, these presented me with best click to kill rates.
On the difficulty side, it is not too hard.
Depending on what unlock you get of course. But the AI does have a habit of either swarming you with a zerg rush, or just wondering off the playfield, leaving you to wait for it to return so you could shoot the thing.
Oh, and sometimes the enemies spawn right on top of you. Causing instant health loss.
They do spawn in set patterns on each campaign level, so you can learn the sequence... But I just found it maddening.
It's more frustrating and annoying that it is challenging, and leads me to not getting a lot of entertainment out of the title.
While I don't necessarily want the hero character to move really fast, I personally would balance it out by speeding him up a few % points. Not to the level of the speed boost you can find in game, but just something to give you the advantage and not realise that the game is suddenly unwinnable due to the position of the enemies on the map.
Look, the game is getting decent reviews for what it does. So there is a known target audience out there.
It is just not for me. I'll probably give it a few more goes over the next week, then uninstall it to make room for something else.
