Nuclear Throne
Vlambeer - @Vlambeer
written by Ois

Nuclear Throne was another title in Humble Monthly for April 2016. I had it sitting around for weeks after downloading so that I could spend a few days playing.

Sadly, I really didn't enjoy this one. And soon moved on to something else.

Vlambeer's bullet hell top down shooter is not bad so much as just not that exciting. And this is really weird as you can see that it is. There's lots to see and do here, but I just could not be arsed with any of it.

Hence a short (pointless) F86M for this week.

The game is responsive enough via controls on KB+M, and character silhouettes shows up easy enough to scan and aim to.

You start off with two different players and unlock more as you make it through the game. Each comes with a small amount of stat differences and a unique special ability. I just did not find them that interesting.

Musically it is... Unmemorable? I guess. I didn't have any conflicts with the meshing of the world to the music and sound effects. It's just another part of the game that does not stand out. It is just... There.

Even the little item pickups are clear enough to know what they are after one or two runs. And tooltips show (can be disabled) when you get near an item you can use. There's a neat variety of weapons, each with their own ammo type which can lead to a situation where you have nothing left to attack with and makes you concentrate on accuracy while the enemies spray around as they wish.

But I didn't have a favourite weapon. Normally you can find one you like and learn how to use it to your advantage. Not so much here. While they all attack in different ways: Some soot right out, others in arcs, others bounce, some come with lasers to aim better... They're just not any fun. And I expect a lot of this is due to the way ammo is handeled.

So erm... Yeah.

You basically run through small zones taking out all the placed monsters. Killing the final one opens a warp gate to the next map. Sometimes a boss monster shows up with a high amount of HP, but there's precious little time or space to counter them.

I expect this is a game where you are just expected to die OVER AND OVER until you get lucky or your skill level allows you the chance to advance because the RNG was in your favour.

I don't mind this type of game and there are those that I do like. Here it was not working for me.

Fans of the game will quickly realise I did not cover anything.

The game is boring.

It is not bad. There's nothing inherently wrong with it.

It is just so bland and uninteresting I could not be bothered and soon had it uninstalled.
