♫ They Built This Game With ROCK and ROLL. I guess. Kinda.
Yeah, I've been busy. Not been playing games much this year. So today I went through a bunch of indie titles until I found one I got some enjoyment out of.
Rock N' Roll Defense is of course a Tower Defense game. It uses a rather neat idea/concept to spin what is usually aliens or zombies or the usual overdone threat into stopping fans getting onto stage by smashing them with various sound frequencies until they pop out of existence.
Which sounds as if it could be fun. It sadly just... Fails on execution.
The graphics kinda suck, though have neat intermission loading art. The music is okay, but repeats far too often. And the drum samples used when weapons hit the adoring fans hurt me more than the snare from Metallica's "St Anger".... Oh, and the game is totally unbalanced.
While you have a variety of speakers (towers) that do all the usual expected tower defending stuff, it is just so easy to lay down the cheapest one and upgrade them each round. Maybe one long range tower in the centre. That's it. That's all it takes to win this.
Even the bosses in the form of the pop idol don't take a lot to take down. Theire need to stop, point, and show off gives your speakers ample time to let loose and knock those idiots flat.
Yet, I can't help admire what the team at NukGames tried to do here. With a few months of polish on the in game art and SFX, another pass of the tower mechanics, this could be a real little hit in the 2D TD genre.
After grumbling on it, I went back and played a little more. This is like the inDev flash games you'd once find on Kongregate.
Plus, it is $1.50 AUSBUX. For that tiny amount it entertained me enough to gripe about it.
