Sound Shift describes itself as "Sound Shift is a VJ style music visualiser mixed with a simple arcade shooter." And honestly, that is it.
Audio syncs with whatever your PC is outputting, rather than select a track in-game, you set you your own music player such as FooBar2K, XMplay, WinAmp, iTunes... Even a Youtube Playlist will work
I really don't have much to say for this one, and by simple they mean really really simple. The arcade element has no collision detection, and you can rack up points by leaving the game minimised. However if you are doing this, you may as well turn it into the visualiser option and remove the game elements entirely.
There is a 'dodge' mode where you gain points by avoiding blocks instead of shooting them, and your point score is based on how close to the block you get without touching it. AND! You lose points for colliding. This does require some skill, but I felt it was a little difficult when your player object is effectively a sprite pasted on the track instead of being a 3D object.
You can use accumulated points to buy different VFX or just try to gain a high personal score. Hardly anything is unlocked when you start, but it does not take long to get enough of a score to unlock it all.
Because there's so little I can say, I'll leave a larger than normal amount of screenshots. The VFX possibilities can show off some really nice combinations, and there are plenty of toggle modifiers to use with them:-
There. Sometimes pictures tell more than words.
If you're after a cheap visualiser with a bunch of modifiers, this may interest you.
Some of the combinations you can use are very nice. But there's no real game here.
