The Deletion

"Are you sure you want do delete this file? NOOOOO! The Deletion is a challenging and fun puzzle-platform game that will frustrate you. "

Russpuppy's "The Deletion" is one of those object avoidance puzzle platformer genre games anyone who played games on a Flash Games site will be familiar with. Frustrating? A little, especially one level just before mid-game. However, once you figure it out it is rather easy to pick up and play.

The main objective of the game is to move the Blue player block onto the Green winning area. You control the block with the arrow keys and while moving left and right give you the option to tap and move in tiny increments, this does not apply to jumping which is always* a vertical jump by the same amount. No half jumping here.

Oh, that asterisk? Just after the mid point in the game, you gain a rocket booster. There's no indication you have this other than the visual and audio effect. The Rocket allows you to control the Blue bock a little more in the air. It has a limited fuel amount that is reset each time you touch a ground black.

There's some neat use of block placement when you get this, where you have to jump up, and fly behind you while avoiding killer Red blocks.

Touching Red Blocks cause a level over and allowing you to restart, or go back to the menu to retry an earlier level or quit. Thankfully you have unlimited lives, but I can see people wanting an iron man mode in this game.

The first Red blocks you encounter are static and can be jumped over. But you are also shown a screen-wipe effect you have to avoid. This introduces you the mechanics in the first couple of levels as the game introduces greater timing and complexity soon after.
Screen-Wipes are easy to keep up with, I never encountered one that sped up to the player, and even making mistakes still gave me time to win a level.

Other Red blocks you encounter can move. They may rotate or change size, move in preset patters, or simply float around the screen. There was always enough time to see the patterns and complete the level if you were paying attention.

Later on, you'll encounter Reds that move with or mirroring you. These were easy to avoid as the level layout makes it obvious on how to hold against a wall and have the Red pass by you instead of colliding. I did like what the game was aiming here for, and have seen games in this genre entirely based on this concept.

Other colours come in later and extra challenges.

Light Yellow diamonds speed up your movement and can help launch you around the level. You still need to get your timing right otherwise you'll smack yourself into a Red.

Golden blocks can be clicked and dragged around the screen. While in Gold mode they act as any normal ground block, allowing the player to jump on them and to deflect floating Red blocks. There's a nice level near the end crowded by Red floaters where you need to reach a high ledge. Dragging the Golds around I was able to corner all the Reds and jump up to the Green.

One just has to remember that while dragging, the Golds turn Red. I suicided myself a few times this way due to not paying enough attention. ¬.¬

Pink blocks slow the passage of time down for the player and the Reds. This is the challenging one I referred to above and in the tweets. It is all based on exact timing, and took me many tries to pull off.

There is a level where Reds are shot at your character, while you have to jump and run a fair way while sometimes moving in Pink. This level was still easier than that earlier one! It might just me my timing was off, but it did meet the claim of "frustrating" me.

The Deletion is one of many of the Object-Avoidance Puzzle-Platformer games. There's some nice ideas here, but the game is only 40 levels long and skilled individuals will fly through it.

Worth a shot if you like the genre. I'd give a greater recommendation if it came with a level designer or a second set of puzzles to play through.

As it stands, $2 USD is not much to as for what it provides.
